Ancient Theatre of Ohrid

Ancient Theatre of Ohrid

Ancient Theatre of Ohrid is one of the most significant archaeological landmarks in the city of Ohrid, located near the old town and overlooking the scenic surroundings of Lake Ohrid. Built during the Hellenistic period around the 3rd century BC, it is the only ancient theatre of its kind discovered in North Macedonia.

The theatre was originally designed in a classical Greek style, with a semi-circular seating arrangement carved into the natural hillside. It was later used and modified during the Roman era for gladiatorial games and public performances, reflecting the cultural evolution of the city through different civilizations.

One of the most remarkable features of the Ancient Theatre is its excellent natural acoustics, which still allow sound to travel clearly across the seating area, even today. This makes it a popular venue for cultural events, including performances during the Ohrid Summer Festival, where music and theatre come alive in a truly historic setting.

Excavated and restored in modern times, the theatre now offers visitors a chance to walk among ancient stone seats and imagine the vibrant public life of classical Ohrid. Its location also provides beautiful views of the surrounding old town and lake.

Visiting the Ancient Theatre of Ohrid offers a powerful combination of history, architecture, and living culture, making it one of the most fascinating and atmospheric sites in the region.
