Samuel’s Fortress

Samuel’s Fortress is one of the most impressive historical landmarks overlooking the city of Ohrid and the shimmering waters of Lake Ohrid. Perched on a hill above the old town, the fortress offers breathtaking panoramic views and stands as a powerful symbol of Ohrid’s medieval past.

The fortress dates back to the reign of Tsar Samuel of the First Bulgarian Empire in the 10th–11th century, when Ohrid served as an important political and cultural center. Its strategic location made it a key defensive stronghold, protecting the city and controlling the surrounding region.

Stretching along the hilltop, the fortress walls are built with massive stone blocks and extend for nearly 3 kilometers in total. Visitors can walk along parts of the ancient ramparts, exploring towers, gates, and restored sections that reveal the scale and strength of medieval military architecture.

From the top of Samuel’s Fortress, visitors are rewarded with some of the most spectacular views in the Balkans—over the red-roofed old town of Ohrid, the deep blue lake, and the surrounding mountains. It is especially popular at sunset, when the landscape is bathed in golden light.
